I love collecting shells from around the world.

A favorite activity for me is taking a few shells and tossing them onto the beach in a random fashion. Then slowly I reconstruct the arrangement, by moving as few shells as possible to create a design in the sand. Sometimes I gather them all up and cast them out again. It's sort of like playing a game of pixie sticks.

When the arrangement feels balanced I take pictures with my camera and select an image for a painting. Back in my studio I can observe the detail of each individual shell and hold them in my hand as I paint. In this piece there are shells from different regions that normally would not be found together. I include them together to create a variety of texture, color and shape.
